چکیده

2,2-Dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123; CAS No. 306-83-2), a colorless light-ether-odor liquid with a boiling point of 27.6°C (at 1 Torr) and an ozone depletion potential of 0.02, is a substitute for a well-known ozone depleting substance trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11) as a refrigerant, and 500 tons a year was shipped in Japan in 1996 according to the statistics surveyed by the Japan Fluorocarbon Manufacturers Association. In August, 1997, a workplace was set up to produce a small container (ca. 15 ml in volume) including HCFC123 as a refrigerant. The manufacturing process consisted of a preparation process, a refrigerant enclosure process in which HCFC-123 liquid is injected into a container, its leakage is checked, and the container is welded, and an inspection process. Use of HCFC-123 increased in mid-September when the refrigerant enclosure process started. This report describes the incident of liver dysfunction among 14 workers repeatedly exposed to HCFC-123 in the processes, and the results of their health surveillance.

Four-Week Inhalation Toxicity Study of 2,2-Dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123) in Guinea Pigs: Isamu KABE, et al. Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, School of Medicine, Keio University—Groups of eight male Hartley guinea pigs were exposed to 30, 100 or 300 ppm 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123) by inhalation for 6 hours a day for 4 wk. All the animals were sac...

HCFC-123-induced toxic hepatitis and death at a Korean fire extinguisher manufacturing facility: a case series

Background Exposure to sustained high concentrations of HCFC-123 is known to be hepatotoxic. We report two simultaneous cases of toxic hepatitis related to exposure to 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123), a common refrigerant, at a Korean fire extinguisher manufacturing facility. Case presentation Patients A and B were men aged 21 and 22 years, respectively, with no notable medical ...

An outbreak of refrigerant-induced acute hepatitis in Hong Kong.

We report a cluster of acute hepatitis in five air-conditioning maintenance workers following accidental exposure to 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123). They presented to us with complaints of feverishness, generalised malaise, and epigastric discomfort. Their blood biochemistry tests were compatible with acute hepatitis. Viral hepatitis serology, tests for autoimmune hepatitis, and ...

Metabolism and toxicity of hydrochlorofluorocarbons: current knowledge and needs for the future.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are being developed as replacements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that deplete stratospheric ozone. The depletion of stratospheric ozone may increase the intensity of ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface, which may be associated with global, adverse human health effects. The greater tropospheric lability of HCFCs, which is due to the presence of C-H bon...

Metabolism of 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (HCFC-141b) in human volunteers.

Human subjects were exposed by inhalation to 250, 500, and 1000 ppm 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (HCFC-141b) for 4 hr, and urine samples were collected from 0-4, 4-12, and 12-24 hr for metabolite analysis. 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis of urine samples from exposed subjects showed that 2,2-dichloro-2-fluoroethyl glucuronide and dichlorofluoroacetic acid were the major and...
